THE INNOVATIVE DENIM COMPANY SHOWS INSIDE THE TENTS FOR THE FIRST TIME DURING MERCEDES-BENZ FALL 2011 FASHION WEEK
There are some companies that create a certain kind of excitement at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Heatherette used to do it. Diesel still does. And, G-Star Raw took up the mantle as it showed for the first time in the Tents. It’s one of those shows that you know you have to see, or you’ll feel left out. Un-hip. So, you beg for entry, battle big crowds, and wait to see something truly special. G-Star Raw didn’t disappoint.
Everything about the show was edgy, from the paint-spattered runway to the hardware that decorated the designs. Not surprisingly, denim was king at this show, since G-Star prides itself on taking luxury denim to the streets, with its use of the raw, untreated fabric.
There was a sort of seafaring theme here, with what looked like life jackets made from denim with inflatable collars, to deep blue fisherman sweaters. There was more tailoring than I expected, and fun separates, but the real innovation here was in the details: big (really big) pockets, big suspenders, asymmetrical hems and fanny packs. There was nothing here that wasn’t interesting, comfortable and very wearable.
